DONKIN HOUSE

Donkin House has new owners and has been altered with additions to enhance accommodation offered. This lodge concentrates on modern, friendly, country, hospitality. A welcome smile, coffee on arrival, and modern comfortable rooms, have resulted in an ever-lengthening list of guests who prefer to stay here on each trip through the Karoo when visiting South Africa.

Donkin House was built in Beaufort West in 1859 and converted to a guest house in 1960 with major extensions in 2003. Because of its location in central Karoo, with all major routes passing through the town. It is central, only a days drive from Johannesburg, halfway between Bloemfontein/Cape Town and Kimberly/Cape Town and within easy reach of the Garden Route and popular coastal resorts.

When traveling in South Africa, do as generations of people have done. Stay over at Donkin House with its clean, easily affordable, "Home from Home" atmosphere. DONKIN HOUSE now boasts in excess of 25 rooms most with en-suite bathrooms. Donkin House provides accommodation only and is located in central Beaufort West, with numerous restaurants and shops within walking distance, the closest of which is simply across the street.

The rooms are fully equipped and the relaxing atmosphere and superior facilities at DONKIN HOUSE place it in a class of its own and makes it the choice of the backpacker and budget traveler. Most rooms have their own barbecue area conveniently located close to your room.

Another bonus feature at Donkin House is that the rooms contain their own kettles, cups and glasses. The beds all have there own linen and the rooms are serviced daily. Donkin House has recently been renovated and now boasts a bathroom on suite in most rooms.

BEAUFORT WEST

In the heart of the Great Karoo lies Beaufort West - the centre of the worlds largest plateau outside of Asia. The history of the earth’s development over the last 280 million years is clearly captured in the rocks of this ancient area, a wonder of the world of science and one of the worlds richest stone age sites.

Just South of the town is the Karoo National Park proclaimed in 1979 to protect the ecology. It covers three important ecological areas - the plains, the middle plateau and the upper plateau.

The Park has breeding programs for two of South Africa’s most highly endangered species - the riverine rabbit and the black rhino.

There are more tortoises than in any other conservation area in the world as well as a wide variety of bird life and Karoo game to be found in the park. A fossil trail, a bossie route, day walks and three day hikes, two interesting drives and an excellent education centre explaining the theory of the Gondwamaland, ensure that there is plenty to see and do.

Beaufort West most famous son, heart surgeon Chris Barnard is honoured in three historical buildings - All national monuments which make up Beaufort West Museum. Visit his humble home, the church in which his father preached and where his mother played the organ.

All gifts, awards and presentations made to professor Barnard are on display in the old town hall.
