INTRODUCTION

Welcome to African Routes, the first Africa-based overland tour company to cater for the 18 – 35 age group. We are specialists in camping adventure tours for the backpacker/student/cost-conscious traveller. We’ve been bringing together adventurous spirits from around the world since 1991 to share in the tremendous experiences which Africa has to offer.

Interest in Africa as a travel destination has grown remarkably in this time, and with it so have we. While our most popular routes have become classics, we are constantly exploring and introducing new itineraries. Tours are action-packed yet our prices have remained very competitive.

Our support bases are located in Durban and Pretoria. It is here in South Africa, that our close-knit team of dedicated people in Administration and Reservations, Operations and Training, together with Stores and Equipment staff, all work together to ensure every aspect of the company runs smoothly and efficiently. Here too are our vehicle workshops, where coach-building takes place and all vehicles are maintained and regularly serviced by our full-time mechanics. The Overcoaches are designed and constructed with your needs and Africa’s challenging conditions in mind. We have combined the rough and rugged durability of the overland truck with the comfort and speed of a coach. From remote pot-holed dirt tracks to tarred motorways, the high-powered turbo engine minimises time on the road and maximises time at the highlights.

We firmly believe that we can operate most effectively in Africa only by being in Africa. Locally owned and operated, African Routes has the advantage of permanent back-up on a continent where it is not unusual to need such support, for things don’t always work quite as planned in Africa. But let’s face it, that’s part of the attraction. It may be frustrating, but you can be sure its equally fascinating. Its many peoples have a smiling, laid-back approach to life and take a challenge in their stride. As a guest in another land, flexibility and an open mind will introduce you to a wealth of unforgettable experiences.
